The Fighting Hawks finished last season with a 1-17 conference record and are tabbed to finish 11th. The Bulldogs were listed atop the preseason poll last season and finished the 2004-05 year in a tie for fourth place with Norfolk State and Morgan State in the MEAC final standings. On the men's side, South Carolina State received 10 of the 20 first place votes and were chosen over last year's MEAC Champions Delaware State. The Lady Hawks, led by second year Head Coach Fred Batchelor, return six members from last year's squad. UMES secured their first winning record in conference play since the 1997-98 season when they finished 10-8 in the MEAC last year. Delaware State and UMES rounded out the top five with the Lady Hawks also earning one first place vote. The Lady Eagles finished the year as both MEAC regular season and tournament champions.
